Philip J Spanier Bio

"Philip J. Spanier (aka Phil) was born in Denver, Colorado, on September 13, 1926, "a great depression kid" as he normally calls himself.  He was born with a natural artistic talent although no one in his family demonstrated to be artistically endowed.  Ever since he was five years old, Spanier used to carve wood figures, mostly cowboys and Indians; this carving was greatly developed throughout the years but put on hold due to other responsibilities.  He attended the Denver Public School system and graduated from South High School in 1943.  Spanier served both in WWII and Korea (1944-1953) in the United States Air Force.

His sculptures are carved in wood preliminary to casting them into bronze.  His series of bronzes depict the body in motion whether it be dancing, embracing, or simply celebrating life.  More recently, Spanier has developed his gifts as a painter, working in an orderly fashion with blocks of color, patterns, and figures.  By integrating carving within the frame of his painting, he extends dimensions to his cubist and abstract expressionist representations.

In all, Phillip Spanier is a self-taught artist-sculptor whose paintings and bronzes have been exhibited in galleries and museums in Beverly Hills, Belair, La Jolla, San Diego (Symphony Towers), Las Vegas (Liberace Museum, 1980-1994), Aspen, and Denver. "
